How to Measure Success with AI Search

Explore 3 possibilities on measuring your AI search visibility without an external tracking tool.

Learn how to track whether your content is being picked up by AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. AI search visibility is harder to measure than traditional SEO, but there are three reliable signals to watch.

Signal 1: Ask AI tools directly

The most immediate test: open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity and search for your products.

Look for:

  • Does your brand get mentioned?

  • Is the answer accurate?

  • Does it cite your website as a source?

A correct answer that cites your own domain is a strong sign your content is being picked up.

Signal 2: UTM parameters in your analytics

Some AI tools (including ChatGPT and Perplexity) attach UTM parameters to links when users click through from an AI-generated answer. These show up in your website analytics as a distinct traffic source.

In Google Analytics or your analytics tool, look for:

  • Source: chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, or similar

  • Medium: referral

💡 Not all AI tools pass this data, and many users get their answer directly in the chat without clicking any link. This signal will always undercount the full impact.

Signal 3: Branded search and sales uplift

People often discover a brand through AI, then search for it directly on Google. Watch for:

  • Increase in branded search traffic (your brand or product name as the search query in Google Search Console)

  • Increase in direct traffic (people typing your URL directly)

  • Sales or enquiry uplift for products with strong FAQ coverage

💡 For brands that sell through retail rather than direct, sales uplift at retail partners is often the clearest downstream signal.

Common questions

How long does it take to see results?

AI crawlers run on their own schedule, typically within a few weeks of your content going live. Early signals like AI citations can appear quickly. Downstream signals like traffic and sales take longer to accumulate.

What if I can't see my brand in ChatGPT yet?

This is normal early on. It takes time for crawlers to index new content. Keep publishing, keep adding sources, and check again in 2 to 4 weeks.
